The Staff Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society of the National Open University of Nigeria (NSMCS) recently conducted an Ordinary General Meeting to address crucial issues and seek input and approval from its members. Held at the university headquarters in Abuja on July 13, 2023, the meeting witnessed the appointment of Mr. Gimba Bashir as the new Vice-President, succeeding Mr. Williams Oshionebo who resigned.
During the meeting, NSMCS President, Mr. Bala Lazarus Sabo, provided updates on the cooperative's lands properties entangled in legal issues, assuring members that efforts were being made to resolve the matter promptly. He also clarified that the EFCC case against some cooperative members, including himself, had been resolved. The allegations were made by an unnamed rival within the community, and the cooperative cooperated fully with the EFCC throughout the resolution process, leading to the case's dismissal.
Addressing concerns related to special loans, the executive members explained that certain government regulations had affected the progress of property loans. They reassured members that plans were underway to address these regulations and expedite the loan process. Due to funding constraints, the property loan was currently limited to N5 million. Nonetheless, members were encouraged to explore other loan options offered by the cooperative.
To ensure a smooth transition from one administration to the next, President Sabo sought the support of the congress to establish an electoral committee. The committee's members would be announced in the subsequent OGM, and members would have the opportunity to vote on the matter.
The Ordinary General Meeting of the NSMCS proved to be eventful and productive, tackling significant issues and providing valuable updates. With the appointment of the new Vice-President and ongoing efforts to resolve legal and regulatory challenges, the cooperative is laying the groundwork for a more prosperous future. Through transparency and cooperation, the NSMCS remains committed to serving its members and fostering a strong sense of community spirit. The forthcoming electoral committee will further ensure a seamless transition of leadership, solidifying the cooperative's dedication to the welfare of its members.
