The Kuje Custodian Centre in Abuja recently witnessed a celebration like no other, as a group of remarkable inmates donned graduation caps and gowns to receive their well-deserved certificates from the prestigious National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

The atmosphere at the Kuje Correctional Service was nothing short of electric, as families, NGOs, and other relevant authorities gathered to witness this extraordinary event. The graduates, who had completed their studies during the Convocation Ceremony of March 2023, were praised by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, represented by Mrs. Adesina Modupe, the National Coordinator for Special Study Centres.

These brave individuals proved that even within the confines of incarceration, one can break barriers and build a brighter future. Mrs. Modupe's words resonated deeply with the graduates: "The sky is not your limit, and there are no bounds to what you can achieve. Your commitment and determination to improve your lives and contribute positively to society despite your circumstances are truly commendable."

The inmates were not only handed their hard-earned certificates but were also encouraged to take advantage of the 100% scholarship provided by the university in collaboration with the Nigeria Correctional Service. This incredible opportunity would enable them to pursue further education in any field they desire, opening doors to endless possibilities.

Speaking on the transformative power of education, the Controller General of Correction, Haliru Nababa (represented by Ibrahim N. Idris), emphasized that these graduates now possess a potent tool for their rehabilitation and development. With their newly acquired certificates, they can step into the world with confidence, ready to compete without being burdened by stigmas of the past.

The dedication of the National Open University of Nigeria in supporting correctional facilities all over the country was praised by Nababa. Over 200 inmates at the Kuje centre alone have enrolled in educational programs since the initiative began, truly showcasing the impact of education in transforming lives.

The event wasn't just about celebrating academic achievements; it was also a call for a change in societal perceptions. The centre director, Controller of Corrections Francis Enobore (Rtd), urged the public to embrace ex-offenders with open arms, acknowledging their potential to reintegrate successfully into society. This acceptance and support, he emphasized, are crucial in preventing recidivism.

The graduates, speaking through Dabu Christian Picado, expressed deep gratitude to the Correctional Services and the National Open University of Nigeria for offering them a lifeline through education. They vowed to make the most of this second chance and become catalysts of positive change within their communities.

As we celebrate the success of these inspiring individuals, let us all be reminded of the incredible power of education and the potential within each person to rewrite their life story. This graduation day at Kuje Custodian Centre serves as a beacon of hope, proving that no obstacle is insurmountable when one is determined to grow and evolve.

Let's continue supporting initiatives that empower individuals to transform their lives for the better, even in the most unexpected circumstances. Together, we can build a brighter future for everyone, regardless of their past.
