The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is poised to release its updated Service Compact (SERVICOM) Charter after receiving the endorsement of Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters. This development follows a comprehensive review process and a recent training session focused on enhancing service delivery across the institution.

The announcement was made during the second quarterly meeting dedicated to the implementation, review, and monitoring of the service charter. Mrs. Kikelomo Ania, a representative from the Presidency's SERVICOM Unit, attended the meeting, held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the university's Abuja headquarters.

According to Ania, the charter is not a static document. "A charter is a dynamic document where there are changes that take place, some things are merged and every charter is subject to review. You must implement the policies stated in the charter so you must look at the implementation and then how to monitor." She emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, adding, "The review, implementation and monitoring is an ongoing process especially the online version of the charter."

Ania further elaborated on the charter's purpose: "What a charter does is to guide experience. There are different steps to a charter which is to develop, implement, monitor and to improve. It has been recognised all over that good governance is essential for suitable development both economic and social. The importance of a good governance cannot be over emphasised and the bedrock of every good governance is a service charter."

The SERVICOM representative highlighted that the charter serves as a public document outlining the university's commitment to service standards. It details the services provided, the expected quality of service, and the mechanisms for addressing complaints and suggestions for improvement. She advocated for the creation of individual charters for each faculty, which would then contribute to an integrated university-wide charter. "From this charter we will get an integrated charter because not all information in the local charter should go out to the public," she explained.

Ania lauded Prof. Peters as a "SERVICOM Champion," expressing gratitude for his support and that of the NOUN management towards the SERVICOM Unit and its initiatives.

Mrs. Foluke Adeniran, the newly appointed Nodal SERVICOM Officer at NOUN, confirmed that she and Mrs. Ania had previously paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor to discuss the revision of the university's Service Charter. Adeniran also noted the positive impact of SERVICOM's collaboration with the NOUN Information & Call Centre desk officers, resulting in timely and effective responses to student issues and generating positive feedback.

In addition to addressing student concerns, Adeniran reported that SERVICOM has been actively involved in monitoring and inspecting facilities across the university and its study centers.

Concluding her remarks, the Nodal Officer underscored the collaborative nature of service delivery: "SERVICOM is not all about individual service delivery but a collective service delivery. If NOUN wins, it means we all win." She expressed her appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and management for their continued support and commended the SERVICOM representatives for their valuable contributions to the unit's development.
