NOUN's Abeokuta Centre Champions Inclusivity During Examinations
The Abeokuta Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is reaffirming its commitment to providing a supportive and accessible learning environment for all students, as highlighted during the ongoing examination period. Prof. Oyekunle Adegbyega, the centre's Director, emphasized the institution's dedication to its core values: flexibility, accessibility, and inclusivity.
Prof. Adegbyega's words were underscored by a heartwarming scene witnessed at the centre. The Director himself was observed providing childcare support, effectively babysitting a newborn, to enable a nursing student to concentrate fully on her examination. This act epitomizes the centre's dedication to creating a conducive and stress-free atmosphere for its students.
Speaking about the centre's mission, Prof. Adegbyega reiterated that NOUN remains steadfast in its commitment to offering functional, cost-effective, and lifelong learning opportunities. "NOUN will continue to demostrate that with the right support, education can indeed be for everyone," he stated, emphasizing that the institution is dedicated to removing barriers to education, regardless of physical limitations or personal circumstances.
The husband of the nursing student, Mr. Oke, expressed his deep appreciation for NOUN's flexible structure. "This opportunity has made it possible for my wife to chase her dreams without compromising her responsibilities at home," he said, commending the institution for enabling his wife to balance her academic pursuits with her family life.
Further testament to the centre's inclusive environment comes from a 300-level Computer Science student living with Muscular Dystrophy. The student, who wishes to remain anonymous, noted the consistently warm and supportive attitudes of the staff members. She highlighted their unwavering support, especially during examination periods, and described her academic journey at NOUN as both impactful and encouraging.
The experiences shared by students and the Director's actions clearly demonstrate NOUN Abeokuta Centre's commitment to fostering an environment where all students, regardless of their individual challenges, can thrive academically. This dedication positions the centre as a beacon of inclusivity within Nigeria's open and distance learning landscape.
